This red rocky islet (200m by 100m) off the coast of Agay was sold at auction by the State in 1897 to Léon Sergent. It changed owners in 1909 and Doctor Lutaud had a Saracen tower built there with a square base, 18m high, topped with a patrol path made of stones from the Dramont quarries. He proclaimed himself "king of the golden island Augustus 1er ! » with currency, stamp and national anthem!
All these events were, of course, pretexts for large banquets and social celebrations with the wealthy members of the region's good society and the aristocrats of the British colony on vacation, who were numerous at that time.
The island was deserted during the 1914-1918 war. And bombed during the landing of Allied troops on the plage du Dramont in 1945.
In 1962 the island was sold to François Bureau, he repaired the tower, fitted it out and made it his summer residence.
In August 1994, while swimming daily around his island, he died by drowning.
Currently his descendants continue to occupy the Tower and maintain it.
Many artists have targeted this mysterious island, films, (Le Corniaud, Planetarium etc.) paintings, photos, postcards, stamps bear witness to this. It has also inspired musicians, poets and writers: Guy de Maupassant in "Bel Ami" and the best known is, of course, Hergé in the album of the adventures of Tintin "The Black Island".
