From Sampzon, a few minutes from your campsite, an old village on the banks of the Ardèche, steeped in history since the 9th century and its magnificent bastide, you will be rewarded for your efforts by climbing the famous rocher 387m high, landmark of the whole region, with a 360° panoramic view of the surrounding areas: the Cévennes, the Gorges, and sometimes, on a clear day, the Alps and Mont Ventoux
From Sampzon to Ruoms, only 7,2km to go (about 15 minutes) to visit the medieval village of the XNUMXth century located on the edge of la rivière. Most of the houses in the village and its old buildings are built of white stones from local quarries. The ramparts of

With its 50m high, 60m wide, this emblematic natural arch over 125 years old, the highest in the world, is very impressive. It is the force of the water that dug the cliffs over the centuries to make the current bridge.
The latest CNRS scientific research estimates that the bridge already existed when prehistoric men decorated the Chauvet cave. This natural bridge has been used for centuries to cross from one bank to the other. It is now prohibited because it is dangerous.
5km from Pont-d'Arc, in the unmissable village of Vallon Pont d'Arc, world famous for prehistory and culture, you can see the town hall. It is the old castle built in 1630 under Louis XIII.
Built in stones and pebbles, it consists of two real floors plus a half and truncated towers.
The interior has a staircase and its wrought iron banister classified as historical monuments, a staircase that leads to the first floor where in the large wedding hall you will be surprised by the beauty of the seven magnificent Aubusson tapestries in bright colors, restored in 1950.

The Saint Saturnin church is at the heart of the village. It was originally a chapel then after the Hundred Years War, enlarged into a Romanesque church, destroyed during the wars of religion, it was rebuilt in 1862.
The quiet off-season village with its 2000 inhabitants sees its population increase tenfold during the summer tourist months. The streets are animated by many restaurants and shops (nougaterie, wine tasting, and souvenirs, etc.)

With extreme amazement and emotion, Jean-Marie Chauvet, Eliette Brunel and Christian Hilaire, not believing their eyes, saw by the light of their flashlight, come alive as if by magic, on the walls of this immense cave 500m long by 50m wide, horses, bears, aurochs, rhinoceros, lionesses, reindeer, an ibex, a panther and an owl, (the only known cave art!), in all 425 moving animals, engraved or traced, with natural black, charcoal and red ochre pigments, perfectly preserved.
The exceptional artists of this rock art were able, with rudimentary means, by the light of their crude wooden torches, with great skill and incredible talent, to bring the animals they lived alongside back to life, and to pass on to us their harsh and dangerous.
To keep the works intact, the cave, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and now under constant surveillance thanks to sensors that constantly measure the chemical composition of the ambient air, cannot be visited. Only scientists have access to it.
